BASEBALL
Homer-Center took a 2-0 first inning lead, but Cambria Heights scored a run in the third, another in the fourth, then two more in the sixth for a come-from-behind 4-2 win. The winning run came when Maverick Dutko raced home from second on a two-out grounder that got through for an error. For the Highlanders, Evan Thomas had two hits. The Wildcats hit the ball hard but right at the Cambria Heights fielders, who played an error-free game.
There’s quite a race going in the Heritage Conference East, with Northern Cambria and Conemaugh Township both undefeated and scheduled to play each other twice next week. The Colts yesterday routed Purchase Line 14-3. Levi Czar had two hits for NC, including a homer, and drove in five runs. Reese Wagner had two hits, with a triple. For PL, Stephen Peruso had two hits and Ryan Matko had two RBIs.
Conemaugh Township scored five in the third inning and took down Marion Center 6-2. Freshman Devin Lohr had three hits for the Indians, and Colin Dinyar, Braden Sarver, and DJ Bambino each had two. Dinyar struck out nine for the win. The Stingers had three hits, one of them a run-scoring single by Brady Haggerty. Both teams were victimized in the field, with CT committing five errors and MC making four. Only one of the winners’ six runs was earned as Camden Rising and Trent Slovinsky combined to strike out 11 batters.
Lance Masser had three hits and drove in three runs as Conemaugh Valley rolled over Penns Manor, 15-3. Gavin Buchan had two hits and Donald Brown and George Weimer each drove in three runs.
Portage scored four in the fifth to take a 6-2 lead, then held off River Valley for a 6-5 win. Owen Slanoc had three hits and drove in two runs for the Mustangs. Devin Steeves, Eric Dinger, and Brendan Brezinski all had two hits for RV.
Conemaugh Valley tripped up West Shamokin, 3-2. Kyron Fields doubled and tripled for the Blue Jays. Christian Davies-Buffone and Ben McConnell each had two hits for the Wolves. Luke McCullough gave up just one earned run on four hits and he struck out 12 for West Shamokin. For CV, Fields went five and struck out 11.
United lost to Bishop McCort, 18-3. Brendan James had two hits for the Lions.
SOFTBALL
Unbeaten West Shamokin gave up a run in the first, but tied their showdown game with Conemaugh Valley with a run in the second, then scored two in the fourth and one in the sixth, coming away with a 4-1 win over the Blue Jays. Freshman Elena Gourley had two hits to lead the Wolves, and five other players collected a hit apiece. Leah Mondi went the distance for the win, striking out seven while giving up one earned run on three hits and four walks for the 11-0 Wolves, who are 8-0 in the Heritage Conference.
Purchase Line scored three in the first on the way to a 7-0 shutout win over Northern Cambria. Riley Mahaffey had three hits for the Red Dragons and struck out seven Colts batters. Kaitlynn Houser had two hits and drove in two runs, and Alorra Phillips also had two hits.
Ella Worthington gave up just one hit and struck out fourteen batters, offsetting nine walks, and United shut out Penns Manor 4-0. Worthington also had two hits, including a two-run double, and Preslee Campbell also drove in a run in the first with a single.
Cambria Heights put up a four-run third inning to erase a 2-0 deficit and went on to a 6-3 win over Homer-Center. Rylee Lane, Margaret Elias, and Kaitlyn Fox all had two hits for the Highlanders, while Bri Birchall had two hits for the Wildcats. Bekah Marshall was knocked out of the circle when she was struck by a line drive in the third inning and Birchall took over for Homer-Center.
Marion Center got a grand slam home run for the second game in a row as Macie Miller cleared the bases in a 15-0 Stingers win over Conemaugh Township. Courtland Treese also homered for MC, which got two hits apiece from Miller, Brookelynn Hill, Hannah Runk, and Gracynn Silvis. Hill combined with Ella Gaston on a four-inning no hitter, with Hill going three and getting the win.
Trailing 2-1, River Valley scored three runs, in the fifth inning and defeated Portage, 4-2. Izabella Speal and Michaela Funyak both had two hits and both doubled, and Sara Bollinger doubled in two runs for the Panthers. In the circle, Bollinger scattered five hits and struck out five batters.
