It was cold and wet at PNC Park last night, and the Pirates’ performance was even worse than the weather.
Greg Brown recaps a miserable night at the ballpark.
Manager Donnie Kelly says it just wasn’t the Pirates night.
Kelly says Bubba Chandler is still learning to maintain his cool when things don’t go well on the mound.
Chandler went 4-and-a-third innings and gave up three runs on five hits, with four walks as he threw only 48 strikes on 83 pitches. He also failed to cover first on what could have been a double play. He says performances like that are unacceptable.
After walking just four batters in 31-and-a-third innings last season, Chandler has walked ten in his first two outings this year, in just eight-and-two-thirds innings.
The Pirates will try the Padres again tonight, with their ace on the mound. Paul Skenes (1-1, 9.53 ERA) makes his third start of the season, coming off a five-inning, one earned run stint last week against the Reds. Nick Pivetta (1-1, 6.75 ERA) goes for the Padres. The airtime is 6:15, with first pitch scheduled for 6:40 on WCCS.
ALTOONA CURVE
Still looking for their first win of the season, the Altoona Curve open a six-game series in Richmond tonight, with left-hander Dominic Perachi making his first start of the year. The 25-year-old Perachi pitched at four levels in the Pirates’ system last year and was 3-1 with a 3.38 ERA in 13 games.
