BASEBALL
United broke a scoreless tie with two runs in the 4th inning and sophomore Brenda James threw a complete-game three-hit gem, striking out 13 in a 2-0 Lions win. Each team could manage only three hits. Ryan Felix had two hits for United, including a double, and he drove in a run while James had the other RBI. Purchase Line did not enter any stats.
Homer-Center scored 5 runs in the first and 7 more in the second and went on to a 15-1 win over Portage, helped along by seven Mustangs errors. Collin Dunn had three hits and Brayden Rado and Nash Budner each had two for the Wildcats. Lucas Gathers had two hits for Portage.
Northern Cambria held off Marion Center, 4-2. Brady Hoover had two of the Colts’ five hits and Troy Slovinsky had two of the Stingers’ three.
A 9-run fourth inning turned Conemaugh Valley’s 7-4 lead into 16-4, and the Blue Jays went on to a 16-6 win over River Valley. Donald Brown, Lance Masser, Kyron Fields, Gavin Buchan, and Joey Toth all had two hits for CV and three players drove in three runs. Zeke Doak had three hits and Joey Wano had two for River Valley, and both homered.
Conemaugh Township held West Shamokin hitless but did not enter any stats in a 6-1 win over the Wolves.
Cambria Heights shut out Penns Manor, 14-0.
SOFTBALL
Powerhouse West Shamokin put up 14 runs in the second inning and beat Conemaugh Township, 16-0, in a three-inning game. Leah Mondi spun a no-hitter and struck out 7 of the 10 hitters she faced, giving up just a walk. Maddi Kiern had three hits and three RBIS and Mondi had two hits and 3 RBIs. Abbi Kimmel and Avery Elkin also had two hits apiece.
Freshman Quinn Bernecky hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the 7th to give Northern Cambria a 7-5 win over Marion Center in a home run slugfest. The Lady Colts hit three dingers, including solo shots by another freshman, Izzy McCabe, and by Ava Messina. Bernecky had three hits and Lainey Vasil had two. For MC, Kaily Anderson hit two home runs and had three hits, while Macie Mmiller had two hits.
Rylee Mahaffey spun a two-hitter and struck out 16, and she and Leah Nelson each had two hits as Purchase Line shut out United, 3-0.
