Pittsburgh City Councilwoman Barb Warwick is expected to introduce a measure that would bar police from cooperating with immigration agents today.
Warwick, a Democrat, says the legislation would prevent local officers from enforcing immigration laws or sharing information with ICE on suspects who are detained for other reasons. The measure would also state that federal agents would be required to show identification while working inside the city. Allegheny County and other communities have passed similar guidelines.
Both Mayor O’Connor and Police Chief Jason Lando have said Pittsburgh police officers are not assisting ICE and have never enforced immigration rules.
