Nineteen cars, including two engines and 17 empty rail cars derailed early this morning near the Horseshoe Curve in Altoona.
Norfolk Southern Railroad representatives confirmed the incident happened at 12:03 AM. Company crews are on-scene working on clean up efforts. No injuries have been reported among the crew, and the company says there is no impact to the community at this time.
Blair County 911 announced that they were not immediately notified of the incident by the railroad, but county officials learned of it through its own sources. First responders were sent to help with traffic control in the area. A timeline for reopening the area remains unknown. The US Department of Transportation’s Federal Railroad Administration is sending investigators to look into the cause of the derailment.
The derailment is disrupting service on Amtrak’s Pennsylvanian line, and buses are being sent to transport people heading East between Pittsburgh and Harrisburg.
