A recently-released report is linking air pollution to higher mortality rates in Southwestern Pennsylvania.
The study published in the journal Annals of Global Health claims over 12 percent of deaths in the region in 2019 may have been caused by fine particulate matter in the air. Researchers with Boston College compared levels of one kind of particulate pollution to mortality information compiled by the Pennsylvania Department of Health in order to reach their conclusions.
Officials with the Allegheny County Health Department say they have not yet been able to review the study.
