Steelers legendary free safety Mike Wagner, who won four Super Bowls in the 1970s, died yesterday at age 76. His family announced that he died in his sleep.
Despite being only an 11th-round draft choice out of Western Illinois in 1971, Wagner played all ten of his NFL seasons in Pittsburgh, with 36 regular-season interceptions and five more in the postseason, including in the Steelers’ first two Super Bowls in team history, both of them coming in the fourth quarter.
Wagner was a two-time Pro Bowl selection. He started three Super Bowls, missing the fourth with a hip injury.
