Westmoreland County Commissioner Ted Kopas is challenging the validity of an agreement between Sheriff James Albert and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
Albert signed a contract allowing deputies to assist ICE agents with local immigration enforcement last September. Kopas says the sheriff does not have the authority to enter into any contracts without the approval of commissioners.
A legal notice that says as much has been drafted by the county’s law department, but Commissioners Sean Kertes and Doug Chew have not yet agreed to have that notice presented to the sheriff.
