The Steelers will officially introduce Mike McCarthy as their new head coach this afternoon at two o’clock, and he has some immediate work ahead of him as he builds his coaching staff.
McCarthy came to a verbal agreement on a reported five-year contract on Saturday. If it seems like dozens of names of potential assistant coaches have already been mentioned, that’s probably a pretty good estimate. Among those whose names were suggested yesterday was Frank Cignetti Jr., who is currently IUP’s offensive coordinator. He previously coached with McCarthy at New Orleans and Green Bay.
Meanwhile, the Cleveland Browns have reportedly zeroed in on LA Rams passing game coordinator Nate Scheelhaase as their head coach target. But their defensive coordinator, former Lions coach Jim Schwartz, is still a candidate. Jaguars offensive coordinator Grant Udinski has pulled out of consideration by the Browns and is considered the top candidate for the Buffalo Bills’ job.
