PennDOT is advising motorists to be careful this weekend during the severe winter weather.
Representatives with PennDOT District 10 remind motorists to slow down, pay attention and use caution if traveling in wintry conditions, especially during snow squalls or low-visibility conditions that may occur. They say staying home and delaying unnecessary travel is the best way to avoid problems, but if you have to travel, the agency advises that people check the latest weather conditions and travel advisories and be aware of any roadway restrictions. They also advise that you:
- Keep your gas tank at least half-full
- Turn on the low-beams during the daytime to keep your car visible to others
- Avoid using cruise control on icy, wet or snowy roads
- Decrease speed on snowy roads
- Clear your vehicle of ice and snow before you head out
- Keep at least six car lengths behind any operating plow trucks, and never travel beside one as you could be in a blind spot.
- Always wear your seatbelt.
Restrictions may be implemented for speed and for certain vehicles during the storm. These restrictions will be communicated via variable message boards, the 511PA traveler information website and smartphone apps.
