With a winter storm forecasted for the upcoming weekend, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) is urging motorists to delay unnecessary travel and exercise extreme caution during expected snow squalls.
Officials from PennDOT District 10, which includes Indiana County, advised drivers who must be on the roads to maintain at least a half-full gas tank, disable cruise control, and increase following distances on icy surfaces.
State law requires motorists to keep headlights on whenever windshield wipers are in use, and safety officials specifically warned against passing operating snowplows.
PennDOT and municipalities are reporting ample salt supplies and plow trucks ready. Officials say roads have been pretreated, additional planning meetings are scheduled as forecasts sharpen, and the Pennsylvania Turnpike will increase winter staffing and coordinate with PennDOT on any needed restrictions.
Motorists are urged to monitor conditions on PA 511, limit travel if possible, and drive at speeds appropriate for winter weather.
