The Pirates picked up their second win of the season yesterday, and again it was a combination of offense, defense and solid pitching that came through.
Here’s Joe Block
Pitcher Wil Crowe threw three scoreless innings of relief with four strikeouts to earn the first save of his professional career. And he impressed manager Derek Shelton.
With a 4-for-4 afternoon and another great day defensively, third baseman Ke’Bryan Hayes says he’s just doing his job and trying not to get too excited.
Starter Zach Thompson had to leave the game after being hit in the right shoulder by a line drive in the fifth inning. He went four innings and gave up two earned runs. Thompson says he was keyed up for his first Pirates start.
Thompson said he had no pain issues after the hit and “should be able to get back out there soon.” In other injury news, Pirates relievers Duane Underwood Jr. and Sammie Howard both have resumed throwing bullpen sessions. Starter Max Kranick threw two innings in a Class-A Bradenton rehab start Tuesday as he works back from an off-season forearm strain. He is scheduled to throw a bullpen session today.
The Pirates open a four-game series against the Washington Nationals tonight. It’s a 6:10 airtime on WCCS. 6:35 first pitch. JT Brubaker for the Bucs against the Nats’ righty Joan Adon)
MLB
The Dodgers’ Clayton Kershaw was pulled from a perfect game after seven innings last night as LA beat the Twins, 5-0. Kershaw struck out 13 and threw only 80 pitches before being taken out of the game. A three-time Cy Young winner and NL MVP winner, Kershaw has thrown one no-hitter in his Hall of Fame career.
INDIANAPOLIS
The Pirates’ Indianapolis Triple-A team threw a combined no-hitter yesterday, shutting out St. Paul, 5-0. Starter Chase De Jong threw seven innings and struck out nine. Relievers Austin Brice and Yerry De Los Santos each threw one inning.
ALTOONA
Richmond beat up on Altoona’s pitchers, hitting five home runs in a 10-6 Curve loss. Travis McGregor gave up five runs and two homers in three innings and reliever Bear Bellomy had another poor outing, pitching just one inning and giving up five runs, including three more home runs.
Game three of the series is tonight in Richmond, with the Curve sending Carmen Mlodzinski to the mound for his second start.
