Several gas leaks have been reported over the last few weeks and some first responders are offering tips on what people should do if they discover a leak.
One of the most recent leaks detected was at 3100 Oakland Avenue in Indiana. Indiana Fire Association was called out and found the gas leak on a buried line on the property. The area was secured, meters were put in place to detect gas, and the scene was promptly turned over to the Peoples Gas company when they arrived. No explosions were reported and no damage was done.
While natural gas itself is odorless, the utility companies add a chemical to make it smell like rotting eggs or sulfur for safety’s sake. Indiana Fire Officials said on their Facebook page that if you smell gas, don’t investigate, light anything or ignore it. They advise you to stop what you’re doing and call 911.
