The Pirates and their fans are mourning the death of Dave Giusti, their closer on the 1971 World Series championship team, who passed away Sunday at the age of 86.
Giusti used his palmball to save 133 games for the Bucs, with a 2.92 ERA in 410 games. In 1971, he led the NL with 30 saves and threw 10-and-two-thirds scoreless innings with three saves in the postseason, one of them in the 4-3 Game Four win over the Orioles. He tossed two perfect innings, striking out one, in that game, the first night game in World Series history.
Giusti was a two-time All-Star with the Pirates. He 100-93 in his career pitching for the Houston Colt 45s (the precursor to the Astros), the Cardinals, the A’s and the Cubs.
