Indiana County’s Area Agency on Aging will be one of the first five such organizations in Pennsylvania to get individual and specialized support from outside experts and the state Department of Aging to develop Multidisciplinary Teams to help protect older adults from abuse.
The announcement was made yesterday at a news conference held by the Department of Aging at the KCAC. These MDT’s are community based groups that will support the Department’s goals by bringing together professionals in various fields like social services, criminal and civil justice, mental health, medicine, finance and public health. The mission is to protect older adults at the community level, and Aging Secretary Jason Kavulich said that yesterday’s kickoff was an important step.
Indiana County was selected for the first round of support along with Bucks and Cumberland counties and two MDT hubs to support Lehigh, Lancaster and Berks counties in one and Clearfield, Jefferson, Potter, Cameron, Elk and McKean counties in the other.
Indiana County District Attorney Robert Manzi said it was no surprised that the room yesterday was filled with community stakeholders that are committed to the process of improving life for seniors.
Weill Cornell Medicine will provide key technical support to help the selected groups establish, formalize, and enhance MDT structures to improve cross-sector coordination, decision-making, and system effectiveness.
