The Penguins have placed defenseman Egor Zamula on waivers for the purpose of contract termination for refusing to report to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton after the team acquired him from Philadelphia for forward Philip Thomasino last week.
If no other team claims him by two o’clock this afternoon, Zamula will become an unrestricted free agent. The Pens will be able to clear $1.7 million in salary cap space. They will not be able to gain any further trade options from the Flyers.
The Pens will return to practice today in Cranberry, hopeful that Evgeni Malkin can skate with them again. He’s been on injured reserve for four weeks and has missed fifteen games. Malkin practiced in a non-contact jersey last Friday.
Sidney Crosby has been named the NHL’s second star of the week for his four goals and four assists in four games last week. This week’s honorees are quite the star-studded bunch. Tampa Bay’s Nikita Kucherov was the first star and Toronto’s Auston Matthews was the third star.
The Penguins will be riding a five-game winning streak when they get back to action on Thursday at home against New Jersey.
