After the Pitt Panthers lost the Military Bowl to East Carolina, the team announced they would promote safeties coach Cory Sanders to defensive coordinator.
He takes over for Randy Bates, who served the Panthers since 2018, is retiring after more than 40 years of coaching college football. It’s unclear whether Sanders will continue to lead the safeties room in addition to his play calling duties. Prior to Pitt, Sanders coached at Western Michigan, West Florida and St. Joseph’s College in Indiana.
