Pirates GM Ben Cherington was looking for a power bat to add to the lineup and yesterday he found one, announcing the signing of first baseman/outfielder/DH Ryan O’Hearn to a two-year $29 million contract. O’Hearn is a 2025 All-Star who played for the Orioles and Padres last season. He’s the first free agent to sign a multi-year deal with the Bucs since Ivan Nova in 2016.
O’Hearn hit .281 with 17 home runs, 21 doubles, and 63 RBIs last season.
The Pirates’ position player group is getting crowded, with O’Hearn, Brandon Lowe, Jake Mangum, and Jhostynxon Garcia joining incumbents such as Bryan Reynolds, Oneil Cruz, Nick Gonzalez, Spencer Horwitz, and Jared Triolo. Andrew McCutchen, who became a father for the fifth time yesterday, is still an unsigned free agent.
