Mike Tomlin will hold his weekly media appearance today at noon, with his Steelers again patching holes in his defense, and now dealing with the suspension of their top wide receiver.
The NFL yesterday suspended DK Metcalfe for the final two games of the regular season after “for initiating a physical confrontation with a fan” on Sunday in Detroit. The Lions fan, Ryan Kennedy, was reported by Metcalfe to security last season when his Seattle Seahawks played the Lions. Kennedy claims Metcalfe was angry because he’d called him by his full name instead of DK. But former Steeler James Harrison said on his podcast yesterday that he’s talked with Metcalfe, who said Kennedy called him a racial slur, and former Bengals receiver Chad Ochocinco said on his podcast that Kennedy had called Metcalfe the N-word and had said something about Metcalfe’s mother. A law firm representing Kennedy says he will pursue legal action. ESPN says Metcalfe will appeal the suspension.
On the injury front, cornerback Brandin Echols suffered a groin injury Sunday and wide receiver Calvin Austin III has a hamstring injury, which becomes especially troublesome with the Metcalfe suspension. Tomlin is expected to provide updates on TJ Watt, Nick Herbig, James Pierre, and Isaac Seumalo, who all missed Sunday’s game.
All-Pro special teams captain Miles Killebrew went down with a season-ending knee injury in Week Six of the season, but the Steelers still have one of the best special teams gunners in the NFL. Wide receiver Ben Skowronek has won the fan vote for AFC special teamers for the Pro Bowl. He’s excelled on special teams even though he is limited as a wide receiver due to having to wear a club on his injured right thumb.
