The Wolf administration is teaming with IUP to make a study of Occupational Safety and Health Association standards in state and public-sector workplaces.
According to a news release from the Department of Labor and Industry, the study will focus on the feasibility of extending the protections of OSHA standards to thousands of public-sector workers in the state. The study will also analyze the potential benefits and costs of implementing these safety standards. This is part of an executive order signed by Governor Tom Wolf in October of last year that directed state agencies to take actions that advance worker protections in Pennsylvania.
In that news release, IUP President Dr. Michael Driscoll called the opportunity a great one for the university’s Department of Safety Sciences. The department has provided support to state businesses for nearly 40 years, helping to prevent thousands of workplace injuries and saving businesses a lot of money.
Governor Wolf is also calling on the state legislature to support Senate Bill 310 sponsored by Senator Tina Tartaglione and Representative Pat Harkins to make OSHA safety rules applicable for all public sector employees, which aligns them with private and federal facility standards.
