A bill aimed at getting fresher and healthier food to Pennsylvania Schools has passed the state house.
House bill 1768, also known as the Keystone Freshness Act, would give schools funding to purchase food from Pennsylvania farmers. The bill had support from the PA Farm Bureau, the School Nutrition Association of PA, Feeding Pennsylvania, and other organizations along with family farms, food banks and school districts. Whole and minimally-processed fruits, vegetables, herbs, meat, seafood, yogurt, cheese, legumes and grains that are grown, harvested, raised or minimally processed in Pennsylvania would be able to be purchased with the funding.
The bill passed by a bipartisan vote of 203-9. State Representatives Jim Struzzi and Brian Smith voted in favor of the bill which now heads to the senate.
