Multiple national sources have reported that the Fenway Sports Group has sold the Pittsburgh Penguins to the Chicago-based Hoffman Family of Companies, for between $1.7 and $1.8 billion. Fenway bought the Penguins from Mario Lemieux and his partner, Ron Burkle, for $900 million in 2021. Fenway also jointly owns Sportsnet Pittsburgh with the Pittsburgh Pirates, and the fate of the regional sports carrier is not yet known.
Lemieux and Burkle had expressed interest in re-acquiring a majority stake in the Penguins this year. It’s not yet been revealed whether or not they are involved with the Hoffman group.
The Penguins carry a six-game losing streak into their game tonight against Ottawa. It’s the start of the team’s annual “Dads Trip,” with the fathers of a number of players accompanying their sons for the two-game set in Ottawa and Montreal.
Coach Dan Muse says the Dads Trip comes at a good time.
Muse says the Penguins have to work to get out of their slump.
Yesterday, injured Penguins Evgeni Malkin, Blake Lizotte, and Filip Hallander all skated before practice, but coach Dan Muse said the status of all three remains unchanged, with no projected date of return.
Faceoff against the Senators is shortly after 7 o’clock tonight, with the airtime on 92.5 FM U92 at 6.
