A bill from Congressman Glenn “GT” Thompson to provide whole milk to schools overwhelmingly passed the U.S. House of Representatives earlier this week.
The “Whole Milk for U.S. Kids Act” will modify U.S. Department of Agriculture regulations to allow schools to offer flavored and unflavored 2% or whole milk as options along with low-fat or fat-free milk. Schools must also provide a substitute for fluid milk for students whose disability restricts their diet. In a statement, Thompson said that he has been working on getting this passed for over a decade, saying whole milk is “an essential building block for a well-rounded and balanced diet, and students should have the option to choose the milk they love.”
The bill now heads to President Donald Trump’s desk for his signature.
