Coach Mike Tomlin will get his first look at this week’s version of the Steelers when he opens practice for Monday night’s game against the Miami Dolphins at Acrisure Stadium. The Steelers have been so injury-riddled, the coach never knows from week to week who is going to show up for work.
One thing she knows for sure: when the pressure is on, he has the team leaders he needs in veterans like Aaron Rodgers and Cam Heyward, who both came up big in Sunday’s win in Baltimore.
Tomlin says Rodgers is the kind of guy the Steelers value.
Tomlin says Heyward played more than usual on Sunday because he saw the need and is always ready to step up.
Baltimore coach John Harbaugh said yesterday that the NFL informed him that a personal foul penalty on defensive tackle Travis Jones for roughing Steelers long snapper Christian Kuntz was a mistaken call. But Harbaugh says the league still can’t explain the ruling that gave the Steelers back the ball after an apparent interception in the third quarter on Sunday, or the call that nullified an apparent touchdown in the fourth quarter.
Tomlin says he never calls the NFL for explanations. Instead, he emphasizes the Steelers not being in a position where such a call determines the outcome of a game.
The Steelers’ injury list is lengthy as they hold their first practice today for the game against the Dolphins. Tomlin listed tight end Darnell Washington, offensive tackle Andrus Peat, and linebacker Malik Harrison all being in concussion protocol. Peat was filling in for Calvin Anderson, who will be out again this week. Anderson was filling in for Broderick Jones.
Cornerback James Pierre has a calf injury and receiver/special teams gunner Ben Skowronek has a finger injury and both will be limited today. Wide receiver DK Metcalf returned to Pittsburgh after being left behind in Baltimore Sunday with an abdominal injury and the coach said Metcalfe is fine.
The Steelers’ nominee, Pat Freiermuth, did not make the list of finalists for the Art Rooney Award for sportsmanship. The eight finalists are Budda Baker of the Cardinals, DeForest Buckner of the Colts, Lavonte David of the Bucs, Demarion Davis of the Saints, Kyle Van Noy of the Ravens, Harrison Phillips of the Jets, and Zach Sieler of the Dolphins.
