Tomorrow marks one of Pennsylvania’s biggest outdoor traditions: the opening day of statewide firearms deer season. Starting Saturday and running through December 13th, more than half a million hunters are expected to head into the woods—many taking part in what’s often described as the “social event of the season.”
Last year, hunters harvested nearly 477,000 deer, including more than 86,000 bucks. The season also led to a record donation to the Hunters Sharing the Harvest program—over 283,000 pounds of venison, providing more than a million meals to food banks statewide.
This year brings even more opportunity. Hunters will see an increased number of antlerless licenses available, and for the first time, two Sundays—November 30th and December 7th—are open in the firearms season.
Seargent Ned Kimmel with the state Game Commission talks about some of the things hunters should do to keep safe this season.
Accuweather meteorologist Heather Zair says that hunters can expect some snow on the ground to help them track their trophies.
And with deer processors especially busy on opening weekend, the Game Commission advises calling ahead before taking in a harvest.
