David Evan Campbell, 86, of Indiana, died Friday, Oct. 27, 2017, at The Communities at Indian Haven.
Evan was the son of the late David and Esther Campbell. He was born Nov. 30, 1930, in Indiana.
Evan was a graduate of Tulari California High School. Upon his graduation from high school, Evan enlisted in the United States Navy in 1948, in Spokane, Washington. Evan spent over 30 years in the United States Navy, serving in both the Korean and Vietnam wars. He was a decorated veteran earning numerous medals and accolades including two Purple Hearts, Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, and an Expert Marksmanship Medal. Evan transferred to the Fleet Reserve in 1968 in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii and officially retired in March of 1978, with the rank of Senior Chief Hospital Corpsman.
Evan worked for many years at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, as Director of Maintenance and Printing. Evan was a lifetime member of the Indiana Elks, American Legion Post 141, VFW, Indiana Moose, Allied Club, and the 40/8 Club.
For the 1980 Winter Olympic Games in Lake Placid, New York, Evan served as Food Service Director and coordinated the gold medal celebratory meal for the USA Men’s Gold Medal Hockey Team.
Over the years, Evan was an avid hunter, fisherman and gardener. He enjoyed working with children and was a swim instructor at the Indiana YMCA. For many years, Evan enjoyed raising and showing his championship Pembroke Corgis.
Accomplished with technology, Evan also taught computer classes at the Indiana Vo-Tech school. He always enjoyed cooking for his friends and family. He will also be remembered for his dry sense of humor and sharp wit.
He is survived by his two children: Mary Esther DeTesta and her husband, Larry, of Irwin; and Greg E. Campbell, of Indiana; a granddaughter, Amanda Kurtz, of Lock Haven; extended family: Jonathan and Kathleen Mack, of Indiana; nieces and nephews, including Nancy Heinzelman and family; Jim Cowley and family; the Lunchuck-Fulton family and other special friends.
Evan is preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Barbara G. Campbell; his sister, Peggy Jane Fulton; and his sister-in-law, Mary Lee Cowley and husband William.
Visitation will be held from 4-6 P.M. Thursday at Robinson-Lytle, Inc. Funeral services and internment will be private. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly suggests memorial contributions be made to the Indiana Salvation Army, 635 Water Street, Indiana, PA 15701.
