The Municipal Authority of Westmoreland County is looking for state funding to repair an underground structure that is part of the sewage system in Scottdale.
The organization is applying for one-million dollars in aid to fix a 100-year-old brick arch that was discovered after MAWC took over the Westmoreland Fayette Municipal Sewage Authority. The arch is similar to an aqueduct and allows sewage and storm water to run under Chestnut Street to a treatment plant in the area, according to engineer Dan Schmitt.
The authority wants to treat the structure to make sure it is not destroyed by erosion, which would stop the flow of water and damage the road above.
