Authorities continue to investigate the scattering of purported Ku Klux Klan flyers across Indiana.
On top of the two flyers that were found on the ground near the IUP post office on Saturday, Indiana Borough Police Chief Justin Schawl said that about 50 flyers were reported and recovered in the borough since the start of their investigation Saturday morning at 8:30 AM. It’s believed the flyers were scattered in the overnight hours of November 14th and 15th. They are looking for security footage and witness accounts. Schawl said they “will not tolerate any incident of hate and will actively investigate and prosecute associated criminal offenses.”
Anyone with information can call police at 724-349-2121.
IUP had reported on Saturday that two people found the flyers Saturday afternoon and they were disposed of. In a statement from IUP Vice President of Student Affairs Dr. Tom Segar, IUP Police are available 24/7 for anyone who has concerns about safety, and they can be reached at 724-357-2141. Students and employees can also report an incident of concern to the Office of Social Equity online.
The Indiana County Democrat Party has issued a statement denouncing the flyers, saying they were meant to sew division in the community, and the fact that this was also reported in Tarentum and Brackenridge showed this is being done by outsiders. They are calling on all civic leaders and residents to condemn these actions and report any such actions to the proper authorities.
The County Republican Party also announced their disapproval of the activity calling it “hateful literature and despicable” and they decry the activities of those responsible.
Indiana County Commissioners have also denounced the actions, saying “we do not condone this nor do we approve this activity in any parts of our county.”
