While the excitement was ramping up on the Pitt side of the UPMC Rooney Sports Complex yesterday, things were relatively quiet on the Steelers’ side after Sunday’s loss in Los Angeles and the cross-country flight home.
Inside the front office, however, there was some activity, as the Steelers released veteran safety Juan Thornhill and re-signed rookie safety Sebastian Castro, who spent training camp with them as an undrafted free agent out of Iowa before signing with Tampa Bay.
Coach Mike Tomlin will have his weekly patching up to do again in his secondary after losing cornerback Darius Slay to concussion protocol on Sunday. At one point, he was down both Slay and Joey Porter Jr., who returned after leaving the game with an injury in the second half.
Tomlin will hold his news conference at noon today, no doubt relieved that he won’t have to face Joe Burrow of the Bengals, who returned to practice yesterday, opening the 21-day window the Bengals have to activate him. Burrow had toe surgery on September 19th and could be activated for next Sunday’s game against New England or the Thanksgiving Day game against Baltimore.
It’s bad enough for the Steelers that they will have to play against Joe Flacco on Sunday. He torched the Steelers for 342 yards and three touchdowns three weeks ago in a 33-31 Cincinnati win on October 16th.
