In his new blog, State System of Higher Education Chancellor Christopher Fiorentino highlights the record 81 percent retention rate this year of first-year students at state-owned universities who have returned for a second year. Other positive news includes attaining a 22 percent enrollment of underrepresented minority students , and he says the State System has “reclaimed” its affordability advantage over more expensive alternatives.
But after outlining the path forward for the System, he echoes recent comments made by APSCUF faculty union head Dr. Kenneth Mash, writing that his visits to university campuses this fall have shown that “people are exhausted- being asked to do more with less.” Fiorentino urges that the State System not just do more, but must “do differently the most important things. And for those activities that are not advancing (the) mission…be willing to ask whether (they need to be done) at all.”
