A spiraling light display startled residents across Pennsylvania on Tuesday evening when a plume of rocket exhaust glowed in the upper atmosphere following a launch by the European Space Agency’s new Ariane 6 vehicle from Europe’s Spaceport in Kourou, French Guiana.
The agency said the rocket’s upper stage dumped fuel at high altitude, producing the luminous spiral effect visible far from the launch site.
