Today marks a significant milestone for Indiana County broadcasting as WDAD celebrates its 80th anniversary today.
WDAD first went on the air on this day in 1945, and was one of the first radio stations in the nation granted its license after the end of World War II. It was owned by Indiana Broadcasters, Inc. at the start with Paul Short serving as GM and President, with the first studios located inside the Indiana Theater building. Progressive Publishing took over the station in 1955, and studios were eventually moved to Oakland Avenue near IUP, and later to North 5th Street. The station was sold to RMS Media Management in 1989 and then to Renda Media in 2004. Our current home is at the intersection of Ninth and Philadelphia Streets.
Ray Goss, former on-air personality and General Manager of WDAD, said it was difficult to choose any favorite moments in his time at the station.
Goss also fondly remembered when he was hired for WDAD after graduating from Duquesne.
The station still serves as the home of Indiana High athletics along with being the home of classic hits and the latest local news.
