It was a frustrating trip to New York for the Penguins, who played without some key players against the Rangers and were shut out at Madison Square Garden.
Paul Steigerwald reports.
Coach Mike Sullivan says the Pens found out that Sidney Crosby, John Marino, and Radim Zohorna would not play at about 3 o’clock, and he also held Jason Zucker out for at least last night’s game because of the injury he suffered a week ago in Minnesota. Still, he says the Penguins had plenty of weapons on the ice.
Sullivan says that despite a 2-5-1 record in their last eight games, they have had a chance to win them all.
Defenseman Kris Letang says the rough stretch the Penguins have endured lately does not erode his confidence in the group.
Letang says the Penguins are playing hard and just need to get a better handle on the small details that lead to breakdowns.
The Penguins’ Anthony Angello stirred things up in the third period when his hip check injured the Rangers’ Tyler Motte. Even though it was a clean hit and Motte had the puck, Angello was penalized two minutes for interference and the Rangers took exception. There were dustups later involving Evgeni Malkin and Mike Matheson of the Penguins, and after the game, the two teams milled about before officials stepped in.
The Penguins play back-to-back home games this weekend…Saturday afternoon at 3 against the Washington Capitals and Sunday afternoon at 4 against Nashville.
