The Indiana man who is accused of stealing a woman’s car while she was fueling it in Greensburg on Tuesday is still at large, and he has been charged with three felony offenses, including robbery of a motor vehicle, theft, and receiving stolen property.
Additional charges against 38-year-old Darryl Lynn Higgins include two misdemeanor counts of receiving stolen property, misdemeanor theft and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, and five summary traffic offenses, four of them vehicle-related and one for retail theft.
Greensburg Police obtained an arrest warrant for Higgins yesterday afternoon after receiving a tip that Higgins stole the car because he wanted to get back to Indiana. Higgins had been treated for a medical earlier in the day at a hospital in Greensburg, but video surveillance there showed him walking out about two hours after entering, wearing no shoes.
After stealing the Subaru Outback at a Sunoco/7 Eleven on Mount Pleasant Street in Greensburg, he made his way to the Lynch Field complex, at one point driving on a walking trail, and fled down Route 119 headed toward Indiana County. The victim’s cell phone was still in the vehicle and police were able to ping it at New Alexandria, but no further.
Higgins has a long criminal history in Indiana, Armstrong, and Clearfield counties and was paroled in October in Indiana County while serving six-to-23 months for drug offenses. He is a black male, 5-feet-9-inches tall, and was wearing black sweat pants and a red shirt.
The stolen 2016 Subaru Outback is gray, and carries Pennsylvania license plate LNY 5617.
