State Sen. Amanda Cappelletti is proposing legislation to create alternative sentencing options in Pennsylvania for survivors of domestic violence, human trafficking, and sexual abuse who were coerced into criminal activity by their abusers.
The measure would make Pennsylvania the fourth state (after Illinois, Oklahoma, and New York) to require courts to consider such abuse during sentencing. This could allow for reduced or alternative sentences, and potentially resentencing, for eligible individuals.
Cappelletti stated the goal is to address the “unethical and inhumane” outcomes that ignore victims’ suffering.
