Penn State Athletic Director Pat Craft says he is looking for a football coach who can “maximize elite-level resources, attack the transfer portal and develop at the highest level,”, and he says interim coach Terry Smith is “absolutely” a candidate after James Franklin was fired on Sunday.
While Craft begins his search, others who were identified as early targets universally said they are happy where they are, including Nebraska’s Matt Rhule, Duke’s Manny Diaz, Georgia Tech’s Brent Key, and Syracuse’s Fran Brown. Iowa State’s Matt Campbell has not reacted publicly to his name being mentioned as a candidate.
And nobody thought to ask Curt Cignetti yesterday at his news conference. Apparently, his answer last year after signing a contract extension still stands: “We’re the emerging superpower in college football. Why would I leave?”
