State Attorney General Dave Sunday has issued a warning about a new scam targeting senior citizens. He says the scammers are sending un-prescribed durable medical equipment such as oxygen machines and wheelchairs to older Pennsylvanians, and then billing the patients of Medicare for it.
Sunday advises that people who unexpectedly receive the items should report it to Medicare and file a complaint with the Pennsylvania Attorney General’s Health Care Section (1-877-888-4877 or https://www.attorneygeneral.gov/submit-a-complaint/health-care-complaint/.)
If you get a bill from a provider you don’t recognize or for equipment you have not discussed with your doctor, “pause before you pay” and verify its legitimacy. Generally Sunday says people should check their Medicare claims regularly, guard their personal information, and do not accept offers for services over the phone.
If you believe you’ve been the victim of a Medicare scam, you can call 1-800-MEDICARE (800-633-4227.)
