After a long and exciting life of 92 years, Betty Jane Hadden Smith, of Indiana, formerly of Marion Center, passed away Saturday, June 17, 2017.
Born on July 31, 1924, she was the daughter of the late James Frederick and Nellie Olive Johnston Hadden.
She married William R. Smith on Feb. 25, 1943. Bill passed away at home on Oct. 12, 1988. Their three children: Daniel E. Smith, of Indiana; David A. Smith, of Punxsutawney and Patricia Kenworthy, of Indiana, were raised on their farm near Marion Center.
In addition to her children, she is survived by eight grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. Exactly one year before her passing, on June 17, 2016, the collective heart of the family was broken at the sudden loss of one of them, a great grandson, Josh Smith, of Punxsutawney.
All of her siblings preceded her in death: Rethamae, Edna, Frederick, Olivia, William, Violet, Edith, Anna Mary, Harry and James. Betty was also preceded in death by two very special friends and companions, Carl Helman and Larry Lauffer. Both men gave her love, laughter and the opportunity for new adventures after the passing of her husband Bill. Having traveled the world, Betty was content that there were very few experiences she missed in life.
The family would like to express their appreciation and gratitude to the entire staff of Beacon Ridge Skilled Nursing Facility for the compassionate care and friendship they provided Betty during her final years.
At her request, no viewing or funeral services will be held. She will be sorely missed, but remembered, with love and laughter by all who knew her.
Contributions in memory of Betty may be made to the Josh Smith Memorial Playground, PACF at 312 W. Mahoning Street, Punxsutawney, PA 15767 (write Josh Smith Memorial Playground in the memo), or at www.bbcfgives.org/produ…/josh-smith-memorial-playground-fund.
