Sarah Miller Bagley, 94, of San Antonia, Texas, passed away Sunday, Jan. 22, 2017, at her residence at Air Force Village.
The daughter of the late Angus and Agnes Macpherson, she was born May 26, 1922, in Brisbane, Queensland Australia.
During World War II, she was a Private in the Australian Army Reserves, where she transported refugees. She was a Scottish dancer in her hometown, dancing to the music of the bagpipes in many competitions. Her father, the Australian bagpiper champion, would play for her in the competitions. She also sang to the Australian and American troops from 1939 to 1943.
In 1942, during World War II, she met Lt. Ronald D. Bagley, of Indiana. They were married Oct. 9, 1943 in Australia, traveling to Indiana a short time later as a “war bride”. During the 30 years her husband was in the Air Force, she lived in New York, Pennsylvania, Alaska and Virginia, retiring to Indiana in 1970 and then to Texas in 1990. While in Texas, Mrs. Bagley crocheted and knitted for the white elephant sales and loved participating in the Bingo days.
She loved to sing, and while she lived in Indiana, she sang in the Graystone Church choir. She also loved her friends in the swimnastics classes at the YMCA. Mrs. Bagley deeply loved and was so very proud of her family and grandchildren.
She is survived by her daughter, Jan Weston and husband Clark, of Indiana; her daughter-in-law, Carla Bagley, of Boerne, TX; her brother, Digger Macpherson and wife Clair, of Ipswich, Australia; her grandchildren: Ross Bagley, Melissa Schloneger, Garet Weston, Will Aufrance and eight great grandchildren. She is also survived by five nephews in Australia and a niece and nephew in the United States.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 66 years, Ronald D. Bagley; her son, Ronald L. Bagley on May 4, 2017; her sister, Janet Simpson and five brothers and sisters-in-law.
Friends and family are encouraged to gather at Robinson-Lytle, Inc. at 12:30 p.m. Saturday to follow in procession to Oakland Cemetery for the graveside service of Ronald D. and Sarah Bagley, with the Rev. Dr. Richard L. Cassel officiating.
The observance of military honors will be accorded by the members of the V.F.W. Post 1989.
