The Penguins’ youngsters will play the final game of the Buffalo Sabres’ Prospect Challenge at noon today against the Sabres.
The Pens beat the Bruins’ prospects 2-1 on Friday with Avery Hayes scoring the game-winner with 26.4 seconds left off a stretch pass from Owen Pickering and followed up with a 5-4 loss to Columbus in overtime yesterday, with Hayes scoring two more goals. Tristan Broz and Atley Calvert had the other two Pens’ goals.
Hayes was signed to an AHL contract with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton last year but earned an NHL contract in March. Now he’s looking to clinch a spot with the Penguins in training camp.
The Penguins’ top draft pick this year, winger Ben Kindel, says the Prospects Challenge has shown him he can skate with the big boys.
One prospect expected to make a strong push to make the Penguins roster is defenseman Harrison Brunicke.
Penguins training camp starts on Thursday in Cranberry.
