Spirit Airlines declared bankruptcy for the second time this year earlier this month but activity continues at Arnold Palmer Regional Airport.
The recent moves for the company’s financial health have not yet affected activity at the Westmoreland County airport where Spirit is the sole commercial carrier. Right now, flights continue from Latrobe to Orlando and Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and the seasonal route to Myrtle Beach is continuing for now with the expectation that it will end for the year in November. Airport authority executive director Gabe Monzo said he believes Spirit will do what it needs to do to stay in business and will stay with the company. Monzo also said that he and the airport’s partners have also talked with other low-cost carriers.
If Spirit would leave, no one at the airport would lose their jobs, as workers behind the counter and on the runway work for the airport and not the airline. They are still working on their terminal expansion project, expected to wrap up by next spring.
