Altoona opened its crucial series with Richmond with a 9-3 win, increasing the Curve’s lead over the Flying Squirrels to three-and-a-half games in the chase for the second-half title in the Eastern League’s Southwest Division. Akron pulled even with Richmond in a second-place tie.
The Curve put up seven runs in the third inning. Nick Cimillo’s two-run double was the big blow. Javier Rivas had three hits and Duce Gourson, Esmerlyn Valdez, Termarr Johnson, and Derek Berg all had two.
A scary moment for the Curve in the seventh inning when Konnor Griffin was hit in the head by a pitch from Richmond’s Will Bednar, the brother of David Bednar. Griffin was able to stay in the game.
Po-Yu Chen starts for Altoona tonight.
