Several police agencies are responding to an incident near Shaler Area High School.
According to Shaler Township Police, the situation is occurring in the 1400 block of Anderson Road. Because of its proximity to the school, the perimeter has been secured and additional safety measures are in effect. Authorities are asking the public to stay away from the area.
According to reports, police say a mother discovered a handgun on her 16-year-old son’s bed while trying to wake him up.
According to investigators, a struggle over the weapon followed, during which the teen allegedly told his mother that if she didn’t return it, he would end up dead.
When she refused, police say the teen grabbed his backpack and left the house. Authorities believe he ran into nearby woods but note that he did not make threats toward anyone.
Officers have since secured the firearm from the mother. They say the gun had previously been reported lost in another jurisdiction.
