Mike Tomlin says the Steelers are not yet finished crafting their roster for the season opener against the Jets in New York on September 7th. Yesterday the team placed quarterback Will Howard and cornerback Donte Kent on injured reserved, with both having the chance to return after a minimum four games. Offensive lineman Max Scharping and safety Chuck Clark were re-signed to fill the roster spots of Howard and Kent.
Sixteen players who were cut this week were signed to the practice squad, including veteran wide receiver Robert Woods, and Steelers vets Beanie Bishop, DeMarvin Leal, James Pierre, and Dylan Cook.
Tomlin says the “process” goes on and so does the evaluation of the roster.
The coach says the practice squad players are “varsity” on many levels but still have room for improvement.
Tomlin also said both of the punters in training camp were “varsity” but Corliss Waitman got the job because he was “a little bit better” than Cam Johnston.
