The Penguins dropped to third place in the Metro Division with their second loss to the New York Rangers in four days.
Paul Steigerwald has the recap.
REACTIONS:
Coach Mike Sullivan says it was a struggle to find space on the ice.
Sullivan says the Penguins are going to have to get used to playing tight games as the playoffs near.
Jake Guentzel had two chances to tie the game in the closing seconds, but couldn’t push the puck past Rangers’ goalie Igor Shesterkin.
Guentzel says the Penguins will need to learn their lessons from the two Rangers games and move on to three tough games, at league-leading Colorado on Saturday, at home against the Avalanche next Tuesday, and then a rematch with the Rangers next Thursday.
Defenseman Mike Matheson says the penalty assessed against him when he stepped between Guentzel and the Rangers’ Ryan Lindgren after the second period horn sounded was a puzzling call.
Matheson says there is a real possibility that the Rangers and Penguins could end up playing each other in the first round of the playoffs. If the playoffs were starting today, they would play each other.
The Penguins recalled forward Anthony Angello from Wilkes Barre-Scranton before the game. Injuries have sidetracked his chances of playing in the NHL this year. He has seven goals and ten assists in the minors.
And for the third time in two weeks and the second day in a row, the Pens signed an undrafted college free agent, Western Michigan forward Ty Glover. The 21-year-old sophomore scored eight goals with 12 assists in 39 games this season. He signed a three-year NHL entry-level deal with a salary cap hit of $859,000, to take effect next season. He’ll play on an amateur tryout contract with Wilkes-Barre Scranton for the rest of this season.
