State Representative Brian Smith has announced he is sponsoring a bill that would eliminate some of the steps concerning stream maintenance near bridges or culverts.
According to a news release, House Bill 2410 would eliminate permitting requirements from stream maintenance activities that are conducted within 50 feet upstream or downstream from a bridge or culvert. It’s part of a package of eight bills that are meant to improve comprehensive stream maintenance and prevent flood damage. Other bills in the package include allowing government organizations to apply for a permit for continuing maintenance for 10 years which would eliminate the need for the government to pre-approve maintenance projects, address hazards within stream by allowing for emergency maintenance permits in consultation with the county conservation district, and removing permit requirements for certain projects.
Smith said in the news release that his legislation would eliminate some unnecessary time-wasting steps for local government leaders.
