The Indiana County Court schedule this week includes a status conference on Tuesday in the Ronald Weiss retrial.
The 77-year-old Weiss is charged with criminal homicide for the 1978 murder of 16-year-old Barbara Bruzda at her father’s Tunnelton bar, a murder for which Weiss was convicted in 1997 and sentenced to serve life in prison. A federal judge overturned the guilty verdict in 2018 and ordered Weiss released, based on misconduct by a state attorney general’s office prosecutor and a state police trooper who testified at the trial. Weiss was immediately arrested and re-charged, and the State Supreme Court agreed with Judge Thomas Bianco’s ruling that the misconduct by the prosecution and the issue of Weiss’s guilt or innocence are two different matters.
There have been five attempts at a retrial, the latest last November, with all of them postponed to a later date while pretrial issues are worked out.
The Monday schedule has numerous plea court appearances, sentencing proceedings, and other cases involving DUI and other offenses.
