On the schedule of items up for consideration in the state senate today is a bill that would eliminate the ban on Sunday hunting in Pennsylvania.
House Bill 1431 will go before the senate today for second consideration. The bill would repeal the Sunday hunting and fur taking ban in the state associated with the Blue Laws that used to prohibit many events being held on Sundays. According to a memo connected with the bill, the purpose is to expand recreational opportunities for hunters and trappers in PA, boost wildlife conservation efforts through increased engagement, enhance economic activity, increase revenue collected from hunting licenses, and make the state more attractive to hunters.
Currently, hunting most game in Pennsylvania on Sundays is prohibited. The exceptions are for coyotes, foxes and crows. There are also three designated Sundays for deer and bear hunting, typically during archery and rifle seasons.
The bill is currently at second consideration. If it gets a majority approval, it will go before the senate a third time for final approval before going to the Governor for his signature.
