As we enter the first few days of summer, our area is expected to have a heat wave come through.
The National Weather Service has announced an Extreme Heat Watch for Indiana, Armstrong, Westmoreland and Jefferson Counties that will start Sunday morning at 11:00 and will run through Wednesday at 8:00 PM. During that time, a prolonged heat wave is expected with record-setting afternoon temperatures and little to no relief during the night-time hours. The four-county area could see heat index values ranging from 100 to 105 degrees during the worst of it.
The American Red Cross of Greater Pennsylvania is advising people to take three critical actions to avoid heat-related illnesses during the heat wave. One is to stay hydrated by drinking a cup of water every hour, even if you don’t feel thirsty, and to avoid sugary, caffinated or alcoholic drinks. The second is to stay in cool environments like air conditioned buildings. If your home gets too hot, you can go to a mall, a library or other public air-conditioned place. The third is to stay connected by checking in on others and asking for help when needed. Make sure pets have access to fresh water and shade.
People are also being asked to remember not to leave children or pets in cars, especially on hot days.
