The Indiana County Sheriff’s Office is warning people that a phone scam intended to scare people into action is once again making the rounds in Indiana County.
According to a post to the its Facebook Page, the Sheriff’s office has received several reports about a phone call where the scammer identifies himself or herself as “Officer Williams” claiming to be with the office and that the office has an arrest warrant for the victim. They then ask the victim to make a payment over the phone to take care of the warrant and fines.
The Sheriff’s office says that people would not be called if a warrant is issued, nor would a sheriff’s deputy ask for a payment over the phone. When money is owed for fines, restitution or costs, that is usually handled by the Clerk of Courts Office.
If you get a call like this and feel it’s a scam, simply state that you want to verify their identity and will call them right back. Make sure you use the correct phone number for the agency and not the number the scammer gives you. Agency phone numbers can be found in a search of the internet.
